Road to Success: A Guide for Doctoral Students and Junior Faculty Members in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from MandyGavin -- A GREAT book, a must-have : to junior faculty. One of my favorite chapters is Chapter 5 which talks about dos and don'ts when addressing reviewers' and editors' comments especially in premier journals. I've learned a lot from this chapter and other chapters in the book. I highly recommend everyone to have this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2012 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jason B. Thatcher -- Bought the book for my Ph.D. students : Co-authored by a strong team of faculty, Venkatesh's "Road to Success" provides a useful map for how a Ph.D. student or junior faculty member can approach their career. It lays out the critical inflection points and techniques for managing those points as well as general strategies for how to manage day to day academic life. More importantly, it provides useful checklists or exercises for readers to work through as they evaluate their progress towards realizing the goal of a successful academic career. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Junior faculty -- A must-read book that should be named "what they don't teach you in grad school" : As someone who has recently finished a PhD and launched an academic career as an assistant professor, I highly recommend this book to other doctoral students and junior faculty members in the behavioral/social science fields. The book provides a number of practical and important hints for academic success and I intend to use it as an ongoing quick reference. The author, Dr. Viswanath Venkatesh, is a highly successful and well respected researcher in my field with a very very strong and continuing record of publications in top tier journals. I was very excited and grateful when I first learned that he was working on this book, which soon after came out when it was most needed. Actually, I wish I read this book when I started my doctoral program several years ago. This book addresses a number of important issues, some of which I was aware of but was unsure how to deal with - including building and sustaining a research program (not a project!) and achieving work-life balance. I would like to thank Dr. Venkatesh and the other valued colleagues for sharing their hard-learned lessons and good career advice. I will keep this book always within reach and refer back to it often. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2012 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Camille -- A must-have, together with G. Davis' book on writing the doctoral dissertation : There are two key reasons for which I found this book a great read and for which I would recommend it to any PhD student in MIS. First, it provides concrete resources and second, it is inspiring. One of the first chapters is a good example of what I mean by 'concrete resources' - It is about the extremely important process of crafting a research program. I found in this chapter a very useful guide to help stucture my own thoughts about my research and try capture my current and desired 'identity' as a researcher (i.e., it was therefore highly useful for preparing for job interviews). As for the inspiring aspect, the book also includes refreshing parts where scholars share their thoughts, values, and mottos about becoming a successful and happy IS scholar. It felt true and personal, and that resonated very much to me. In sum, I expect that I will keep this book close to me as I make my way in the field, and that going back into reading a few chapters now and then will continue helping and motivating me. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from KatieB -- A Must Read for PhD Students! : I highly recommend Dr. Venkatesh's book, Road to Success. I am a doctoral student in MIS and we read this book for one of our seminars. The book is very insightful into what is involved in being a Ph.D. student and extends through to life after the PhD. The book is well organized, informative, and covers just about any topic you might wonder about. Even beyond the class, I find myself referring to it in order to answer questions I might have concerning an expectation, or how to handle a particular situation. It is even fun to just browse through - or open it up to any random page and I find there is something interesting to read. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2012 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Abhay -- Excellent resource for doctoral students and junior faculty : . The book also discusses teaching approaches from which junior faculty can benefit. While the author is in MIS discipline, and a lot of the examples given are pertinent to MIS, doctoral students from other behavioral disciplines can also benefit from reading the book.
